The Skills Tracking module is used to identify skills that are meaningful to your organization, and to provide tools to enable tracking of those skills by employees.

Skills Tracking is used by companies to inventory the skills of their employees.  To do this, the first step is to identify skills that are meaningful to the company.  This skills database is entered initially after the system is installed as a setup activity.  Each skill is given a name, is categorized using user defined categories, and an optional description entered.  The category and descriptive information assist employees and managers when performing assessments and approvals.  Another setup activity involves setting up the standardized skill levels.  For example, you might choose levels such as Expert, Proficient, Rookie, etc.  The administrator is free to define as many levels as needed.

Once the database has been built, the system is ready for use. Generally, companies choose to inventory skills on a scheduled and regular basis.  Some companies might do so annually, while other might choose quarterly or monthly.  Assessments can be made at any frequency, however it is often helpful to do them company wide, on a regular scheduled basis.  Employees use an assessment form to enter their skills.  The process is a simple matter of reviewing the master list of skills, and entering their level of proficiency for each one.  Once an assessment has been completed, it is forwarded to a manager for review and approval.

Managers are informed of pending skill assessments through the email system.  The manager reviews each assessment, and makes a judgment on each level entered.  Levels can be adjusted by the manager prior to approval.

Once assessments have been approved, the data is available for searching and reporting.  You can perform complex searches to locate employees having a desired set of skills.  You can track skills development over time using the reports provided.
